Description	View of a commercial building or buildings at 408-418 Grand Avenue, Fair Haven Project area, New Haven. View is looking across the intersection with Haven Street toward what appears to be a single three-story brick building that has a varied facade style and multiple doorways that front on Grand Avenue. A sign at the first-floor level facing Grand Avenue near the corner reads: "PUERTO RICO LIBRE/OCT 27/TODOS AL/MADISON SQUARE GARDEN/PSP-MPI". Cars can be seen in the roadway.
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. Dated November 19, 1974. One of a collection of photographs taken by the New Haven Redevelopment Agency to document a massive urban planning and development project undertaken from 1956 through the mid-1970s. The federally-financed redevelopment initiative was realized through a series of projects focused on particular New Haven city neighborhoods identified by street or area names. These projects involved the demolition of old structures and construction of new buildings, roadways and other facilities. The Fair Haven redevelopment area was comprised of a residential, commercial and industrial area east of the Mill River. Fair Haven was not always a part of New Haven, and merged most recently in 1870. It was a center for oystering throughout the nineteenth century and into the twentieth. Shipbuilding and other industries also supported the economy. Redevelopment efforts in the Fair Haven project area focused on run-down housing, commercial and industrial areas.
