Description	View of a site identified as a Wooster Square project area street corner, New Haven, probably Russo Park. Park benches can be seen in front of a brick wall that borders what appears to be a park. The backs of apartment or row houses can be seen in the background. A one-story brick building can be seen at far right.
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. Dated January 1967. One of a collection of photographs taken by the New Haven Redevelopment Agency to document a massive urban planning and development project undertaken from 1956 through the mid-1970s. The federally-financed redevelopment initiative was realized through a series of projects focused on particular New Haven city neighborhoods identified by street or area names. These projects involved the demolition of old structures and construction of new buildings, roadways and other facilities. The Wooster Square project targeted an old New Haven neighborhood with many lovely nineteenth-century houses as well as multi-family dwellings and industrial buildings. The construction of Interstates 95 and 91 and redevelopment initiatives swallowed up a number of buildings. Many others were refurbished as part of an effort to preserve the architectural heritage and character of the neighborhood. Comparison with other photographs indicates that this is the same location as the one identified as the Russo Park site before redevelopment, on Wooster Street east of Brewery. Russo Park appears on current maps on the east side of Wooster Street between Brewery and Chapel Streets.
