Description	View of a commercial building, possibly on Edgewood Avnue or Gill Street, Dwight project area, New Haven. Virsal Oil Company occupies a one-story brick building at center. A sign projecting over the front of the building reads: "GM/DELCO/HEATING/AIRCONDITIONING/VIRSAL/OIL COMPANY/Authorized Dealer". A station wagon and truck are parked in the driveway in front of the building. Another car is parked across the street in the left foreground. A large brick building that appears to front on an intersecting street can be seen to the left of the Virsal building.
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. One of a collection of photographs taken by the New Haven Redevelopment Agency to document a massive urban planning and development project undertaken from 1956 through the mid-1970s. The federally-financed redevelopment initiative was realized through a series of projects focused on particular New Haven city neighborhoods identified by street or area names. These projects involved the demolition of old structures and construction of new buildings, roadways and other facilities. The Dwight Street redevelopment area was comprised of the residential neighborhood bounded by Whalley and Legion Avenues. Redevelopment efforts in this project area focused on new housing and schools. A 1950 city directory map shows Gill Street running from Chapel Street to Edgewood Avenue between Day and Dwight Streets. It no longer extends to Edgewood on current maps.
