Description	View of the southwest corner of Church and Chapel Streets, New Haven, Church Street Project area, prior to redevelopment. View appears to be from the northeast corner of the intersection. Street signs can be seen at far right. Signs visible on the windows and above the storefronts of a two-story commercial building on the corner identify some of the business occupants. They read (from left to right): "NATIONAL/SHIRT SHOPS" (on the corner), "Cosmopolitan[?]/HOSIERY GLOVES" and "John Irving/featuring/Mary Jane/Shoes. Signs also hang in the store windows indicating store moving and closing sales. A billboard on top of the building seems to be in the process of being dismantled.
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. Dated early 1959. One of a collection of photographs taken by the New Haven Redevelopment Agency to document a massive urban planning and development project undertaken from 1956 through the mid-1970s. The federally-financed redevelopment initiative was realized through a series of projects focused on particular New Haven city neighborhoods identified by street or area names. These projects involved the demolition of old structures and construction of new buildings, roadways and other facilities. This building was located in "the front block" of the Church Street Project. Prior to redevelopment the Church Street Project area had been characterized by a mix of small stores, restaurants, theaters and residences. In the course of redevelopment, whole blocks, including the one depicted, were demolished to make way for larger modern structures such as department stores, hotels, office buildings, a mall and the New Haven Coliseum.
