Description	Mayor Richard C. Lee and a group of men, women and children are gathered around a slide at an event identified as the Elm Haven playground opening, Dixwell Project area, New Haven. The group is in an area bordered by a chain link fence. Two boys are on the slide to the left. One of the men watching the children has a camera around his neck.
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. Dated June 1965. One of a collection of photographs taken by the New Haven Redevelopment Agency to document a massive urban planning and development project undertaken from 1956 through the mid-1970s. The federally-financed redevelopment initiative was realized through a series of projects focused on particular New Haven city neighborhoods identified by street or area names. These projects involved the demolition of old structures and construction of new buildings, roadways and other facilities. Much of the area involved in the Dixwell Project had been characterized by a mix of residences, small stores and businesses. As part of redevelopment, older buildings were rehabilitated or demolished to make way for modern structures and centralized shopping plazas. Redevelopment extended beyond Dixwell Avenue proper to surrounding and adjacent areas. Elm Haven, first begun in the pre-World War II era, was an early attempt to improve housing for low-income New Haven residents. Lee was mayor of New Haven 1954-1970, and a driving force behind the redevelopment effort.
