The road appears to be near completed, but some barriers can be seen on the near side of the College Street overpass. North and South Frontage Roads are visible on either side of the connector.
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. One of a collection of photographs taken by the New Haven Redevelopment Agency to document a massive urban planning and development project undertaken from 1956 through the mid-1970s. The federally-financed redevelopment initiative was realized through a series of projects focused on particular New Haven city neighborhoods identified by street or area names. These projects involved the demolition of old structures and construction of new buildings, roadways and other facilities. Oak Street extended from Congress Avenue to Howe Street, two blocks south of George Street. The Oak Street neighborhood was an early and major target of redevelopment. It was an ethnically diverse area of shops, restaurants, residences and family businesses. The perception of it as a gritty neighborhood with decayed housing stock caused planners to seek to substantially reconfigure and transform the area. Oak Street and other roadways and buildings entirely disappeared, replaced by the new connector and modern commercial and residential structures. The Oak Street (Route 34) Connector is also known as the Richard C. Lee Connector. Lee was mayor of New Haven during the redevelopment period, and a driving force behind the effort.
