Description	View of the east side of Church Street, looking northeast toward the intersection with Elm Street, State Street project area, New Haven. A multi-story building with a cupola can be seen on the northeast corner of the intersection. "UNION TRUST" is visible over the ground-floor entrance. Another multi-story building faces Church Street and New Haven Green to the right. Mongillo's can be seen farther to the right. People are walking in New Haven Green in the foreground. The classical facade of the courthouse building, featuring a pediment, columns and statuary, is partially visible in the far left background.
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. Dated May 25, 1971. One of a collection of photographs taken by the New Haven Redevelopment Agency to document a massive urban planning and development project undertaken from 1956 through the mid-1970s. The federally-financed redevelopment initiative was realized through a series of projects focused on particular New Haven city neighborhoods identified by street or area names. These projects involved the demolition of old structures and construction of new buildings, roadways and other facilities. The State Street project targeted the commercial thoroughfare extending from Water Street to the Hamden town line. The downtown section was a shopping district with a variety of stores; the east side of the street backing on the railroad cut. Redevelopment involved removing a number of older structures to widen State Street, as well as reconfigured roadways and new buildings. Adjacent areas were also included in the State Street project, and involved both new construction and preservation of old structures, many of them put to new uses.
