Description	View of Church Street looking north from George Street, New Haven, prior to redevelopment. Commercial buildings and storefronts can be seen. Businesses on the west side of Church Street include the Hotel Oneco and First New Haven National Bank. A sign painted on the south side of the hotel reads in part: "JOHN LEARY_/BILLIARD/ROOM/IMPORTED __ DOMESTIC/ALES". A sign posted on the south side of the bank building near street level advertises drive-in tellers and parking. A sign for Merit [Clothes] is visible farther up the street. On the east side of Church Street, a restaurant on the corner of George Street advertises Coca-Cola. Looking farther up the east side of Church, signs for the A.E. Alling Rubber Co. and Loew's Poli theater can be seen. The theater marquee indicates that Gigi is the current movie. Cars can be seen on the street, and pedestrians are visible on the sidewalks.
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. One of a collection of photographs taken by the New Haven Redevelopment Agency to document a massive urban planning and development project undertaken from 1956 through the mid-1970s. The federally-financed redevelopment initiative was realized through a series of projects focused on particular New Haven city neighborhoods identified by street or area names. These projects involved the demolition of old structures and construction of new buildings, roadways and other facilities. Much of the Church Street project area had been characterized by a mix of small stores, restaurants, theaters and residences. In the course of redevelopment, whole blocks were demolished to make way for larger modern structures such as department stores, hotels, office buildings, a mall and the New Haven Coliseum.
