Description	View of Chapel Street, New Haven, Church Street Project area, prior to redevelopment. View is looking west from near the intersection with Church Street. Women pedestrians can be seen crossing the street. Partially visible to the left are signs for businesses on the south side of Chapel, including the John Irving shoe store and "A & S DISCOUNT HOUSE/SILVERWARE JEWELERY [sic] LINENS". Malley's department store can be seen on the southeast corner of Chapel and Temple Streets. Farther west along Chapel, signs at rooftop level identify "MURIELS/House of fashion" and "HOTEL TAFT". Buses and cars can be seen on the street. The New Haven Green is partially visible on the right.
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. One of a collection of photographs taken by the New Haven Redevelopment Agency to document a massive urban planning and development project undertaken from 1956 through the mid-1970s. The federally-financed redevelopment initiative was realized through a series of projects focused on particular New Haven city neighborhoods identified by street or area names. These projects involved the demolition of old structures and construction of new buildings, roadways and other facilities. Prior to redevelopment the Church Street Project area had been characterized by a mix of small stores, restaurants, theaters and residences. In the course of redevelopment, whole blocks, including the one depicted, were demolished to make way for larger modern structures such as department stores, hotels, office buildings, a mall and the New Haven Coliseum.
