Description	View of Whitneyville from the south. Industrial buildings and houses line a road that leads to the opening of a covered bridge across the Mill River (not visible). The slope of East Rock is in the background. "Sand" banks are indicated to the left and right foreground, on either side of the road. A "chesnut" [chestnut] tree is on the right and "apple trees" are in front of the large factory building. Detailed drawings of several buildings surround the main drawing. In 1798, Eli Whitney, the inventor of the cotton gin, established the first factory in America for making firearms on the site of Whitneyville.<br>
