Description	View of a tower identified as a submarine escape training tank as the United States Submarine Base, New London. A spiral staircase leads to the top of the tower, which is surmounted by an octagonal structure with windows. What appears to be a one-story brick building adjoins the tower to the left.
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. Mounted on oaktag. Information on back of mount appears to be a transcript of a news article or release at the time of the tower's completion, and includes the following details: Tower was 155 feet high and constructed of steel. It was built to provide for training submariners in underwater escape techniques using the Momsen safety lung. Water depth was 100 feet with entry locks at the 20 and 50 foot depth as well. Tower was operational August 15, 1930. The Momsen safety lung was developed by Charles Bowers Momsen, a U.S. Navyl officer and submariner who participated in the successful rescue of crewmen from the sunken submarine USS Squalus and subsequent salvage of the vessel in 1939.
