Description	An industrial building with a small square Gothic tower is at the right. It appears to be a frame structure on a stone foundation, built into the side of a hill. Smoke issues from the chimney of a stone building to its left with a sign that reads: "Office." Men load or unload boxes from a wagon drawn by four horses. A horse-drawn cart is on a road at the left. Other buildings appear to be houses, a barn or shed, and a second factory with a cupola and smokestack. At the far right, a road or path leads through a gate in a rail fence towards a stream below the main mill building. Inscribed in block beneath image: "Hotchkiss & Merriman Manufacturing Co.'s Gum Elastic Suspender Manufactory, Waterbury, Connecticut."<br>
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. <br>The business was founded in 1839 as Hotchkiss & Pritchard. From 1843-1857, it was Hotchkiss & Merriam. The partners were Julius Hotchkiss, who was also the first mayor of Waterbury, and Charles Buckingham Merriam. In 1857 the company consolidated with the Warren & Newton Manufacturing Company to become the American Suspender Company. <br>
