Description	View of businesses and commercial buildings on Wooster Street between Brewery and Chestnut Streets, Wooster Square Project area, New Haven. Frank Pepe Pizzeria can be seen at 157 Wooster to the right. A sign on the near side of the building that reads "BRASILE'S BAKERY/159" points toward the rear. To the left is a two-story building with Thomas Barber Shop in the right-hand storefront and a Giammanco[?] grocery store to the left. Signs in the grocery store display windows advertise cigars, cigarettes, stationery, dry goods, novelties and appliances. Two campaign signs promoting Giamo for Congress can be seen on either side of the left-hand window. Two cars are parked in front of the buildings.
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. One of a collection of photographs taken by the New Haven Redevelopment Agency to document a massive urban planning and development project undertaken from 1956 through the mid-1970s. The federally-financed redevelopment initiative was realized through a series of projects focused on particular New Haven city neighborhoods identified by street or area names. These projects involved the demolition of old structures and construction of new buildings, roadways and other facilities. The Wooster Square project targeted an old New Haven neighborhood with many lovely nineteenth-century houses as well as multi-family dwellings and industrial buildings. The construction of Interstates 95 and 91 and redevelopment initiatives swallowed up a number of buildings. Many others were refurbished as part of an effort to preserve the architectural heritage and character of the neighborhood.
