Description	View of a street in the Lower Project Area of the Church Street project, New Haven, prior to redevelopment. A brick commercial building can be seen on the right. A sign over the doorway on the right reads: "JIM MCGOVERN'S/GRILL". Painted on the window to the right of the door is: "McGovern's/RESTAURANT". A man stands in the doorway at the left end of the building. Painted on the display window to the right of the door is "FLANAGAN/AMBULANCE SERVICE". Three young men sit on the stoop of a four-story residential building to the left. A three-story brick building can be seen to the left. Other multi-story houses are visible farther down the street to the left.
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. One of a collection of photographs taken by the New Haven Redevelopment Agency to document a massive urban planning and development project undertaken from 1956 through the mid-1970s. The federally-financed redevelopment initiative was realized through a series of projects focused on particular New Haven city neighborhoods identified by street or area names. These projects involved the demolition of old structures and construction of new buildings, roadways and other facilities. Much of the Church Street project area had been characterized by a mix of small stores, restaurants, theaters and residences. In the course of redevelopment, whole blocks were demolished to make way for larger modern structures such as department stores, hotels, office buildings, a mall and the New Haven Coliseum.
