a
massive
urban
planning
and
development
project
undertaken
from
1956
through
the
mid-1970s
. The
federally-financed
redevelopment
initiative
was
realized
through
a
series
of
projects
focused
on
particular
New
Haven
city
neighborhoods
identified
by
street

names
. These
projects
involved
the
demolition
of
old
structures
and
construction
of
new
buildings
,
roadways
and
other
facilities
.
Much
of the
area

had been
characterized
by a
mix
of
small
stores
,
restaurants
,
theaters
and
residences

part
of
redevelopment
,
whole
blocks
were
demolished
to
make

structures
such
as
department
stores
,
hotels
,
office
buildings
, a
mall
and the
New
Haven
Coliseum
.
SNET
no
longer
owns
the
George
Street
building
,
which
is
now
occupied
by
other
business
firms
.
Malley's
department
store
had been a
fixture
of
downtown
New
Haven
,
occupying
a
building
on the
corner
of
Chapel
and
Temple
Streets
,
demolished
as
part
of
redevelopment
. The
new
Malley's
and
Macy's
stores
occupied
adjoining
lots
on
Church
Street
. They
eventually
closed
,
leaving
the
buildings
vacant
. The
Malley's
building
has
since
been
demolished
