Description
Bird's-eye
view
of
New
Haven
from
Ferry
Hill
.
Ferry
Hill
and its
surrounding
vegetation
is
prominent
in the
foreground
. The
side
of the
Quinnipiac
River
that
appears
closest
to the
viewer
is
considerably
more
rural
than the
far
side
.
Fenced-in
fields
and a
farm
are
visible
. A
horse-drawn
carriage
passes
by a
pasture
where
cows
are
grazing
.
Men
are
harvesting
hay
and
loading
it
onto a
wagon
on the
right
.
Below
them are
sheep
in a
pasture
. On the
right
side
is
East
Rock
and
sailing
vessels
moving
into a
cove
.
Industrial
buildings
line
the
riverside
,
many
of
which
have
smoke
or
steam
issuing
from their
smokestacks
. A
covered
bridge
extends
across
the
river
in the
middle
,
where
horse-drawn
carriages
are
crossing
. The
New
Haven
&
Northern
Railroad
is
leaving
the
depot
on a
wharf
that
is
connected
by the
aforementioned
bridge
. A
train
is
visible
off
the
left
,
which
is
probably
the
same
railroad
line
.
Long
Wharf
extends
into the
water
on the
left
side
.
Several
sailing
vessels
are on the
water
, as
well
as
one
steamboat
named
the
Connecticut
.
Several
churches
are
visible
in the
skyline
.
