Description	View of the east side of Temple Street north of George Street, Church Street Project area, New Haven. One-way signs are visible near the intersection with George Street. Traffic is heading south on Temple. Small two- and three-story commercial buildings can be seen on the block north of George Street. Businesses occupying some of the buildings include (from right foreground to left background): Temple Camera Shop, a barber shop, the Temple Hat Shop, Big Boy Restaurant and Temple Restaurant. Farther up Temple Street signs for Stone College and Malleyâ€™s department store can be seen.
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. Dated April 1959. One of a collection of photographs taken by the New Haven Redevelopment Agency to document a massive urban planning and development project undertaken from 1956 through the mid-1970s. The federally-financed redevelopment initiative was realized through a series of projects focused on particular New Haven city neighborhoods identified by street or area names. These projects involved the demolition of old structures and construction of new buildings, roadways and other facilities. Much of the area involved in the Church Street project had been characterized by a mix of small stores, restaurants, theaters and residences. In the course of redevelopment, whole blocks were demolished to make way for larger modern structures such as department stores, hotels, office buildings, a mall, New Haven Coliseum, and the Temple Street Garage, which would occupy the site depicted.
