Description	View of the intersection of Church and Elm Streets in the Church Street redevelopment project area, New Haven. The southeast corner of the intersection and commercial buildings on the east side of Church street are visible. A sign can be seen in the window on the Elm Street side of a building on the corner. It reads in part: "__MERICA/__/JOBS/SAVINGS/HOMES/INSURANCE/AND/SECURITIES. Other signs are visible over storefronts on Church Street. One advertises "FOUNTAIN/SANDWICHES". New Haven Green can be seen to the right. A black man is walking toward the Church Street crosswalk at center. Cars and vans can be seen on Church Street.One of the vans is a "U.S. Mail" vehicle. A "Don't Walk" sign is visible on Elm Street at far right.
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. Photograph is labeled "Church St. Landscaping - before". One of a collection of photographs taken by the New Haven Redevelopment Agency to document a massive urban planning and development project undertaken from 1956 through the mid-1970s. The federally-financed redevelopment initiative was realized through a series of projects focused on particular New Haven city neighborhoods identified by street or area names. These projects involved the demolition of old structures and construction of new buildings, roadways and other facilities. Much of the area involved in the Church Street project had been characterized by a mix of small stores, restaurants, theaters and residences. As part of redevelopment, whole blocks were demolished to make way for larger modern structures such as department stores, hotels, office buildings, a mall and the New Haven Coliseum.
