Description	View of the west side of Church Street between George and Crown Streets, New Haven, prior to redevelopment. View appears to be from the east side of the intersection of Church and George and is identified as Lower Church Street. Commercial buildings and storefronts can be seen. Businesses include Allen's "cut rate" store, Howard Shoes, the Hotel Oneco and The First New Haven National Bank. A sign painted on the south side of the hotel reads in part: "JOHN LEARY'S/BILLIARD/ROOM/IMPORTED and DOMESTIC/ALES". A sign posted on the side of the bank building advertises drive-in tellers and parking. Farther up Church Street, a sign for Merit [Clothes] is visible. Pedestrians can be seen on the sidewalk; cars are parked along the street to the right.
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. One of a collection of photographs taken by the New Haven Redevelopment Agency to document a massive urban planning and development project undertaken from 1956 through the mid-1970s. The federally-financed redevelopment initiative was realized through a series of projects focused on particular New Haven city neighborhoods identified by street or area names. These projects involved the demolition of old structures and construction of new buildings, roadways and other facilities. Much of the Church Street project area had been characterized by a mix of small stores, restaurants, theaters and residences. In the course of redevelopment, whole blocks were demolished to make way for larger modern structures such as department stores, hotels, office buildings, a mall and the New Haven Coliseum.
