Description	Governor Chester Bowles, opera singer Marian Anderson and jazz artist W.C. Handy are standing in a group. Bowles holds a silver punch bowl identified as from the U.S.S. Hartford, a Union Navy ship in the Civil War. Caption reads: "CAPTAIN'S SILVER from the Flagship Hartford interests Marion [sic] Anderson at Governor's Residence. Left-right: Governor Bowles, Miss Anderson, W.C. Handy, composer of "St. Louis Blues."
Notes	Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) barred Marian Andersen from singing at Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C. April 1939. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt resigned from the DAR shortly after the singer was denied use of the hall for a concert.
