Description	Brick commercial buildings line the junction of two city streets. Signs on the left read: "SALZ / Clothiers & Jewelers "Business / Service / Bureau" "Gay / Modern." "Alderman Drug Co. / Ice Cream Bar" Sealtest / Ice Cream" "Prescriptions Whelans Cosmetics." Merchandise is displayed in the plate glass store windows. A metal frame for a billboard is on the rooftop. A metal trash can, a mailbox, a fire hydrant, a fire callbox and possibly a police callbox are on the sidewalk at the street corner. Lettering on the trash can reads: Help Keep / Our / City Clean." Men and women stand on the sidewalk. One woman wears a kerchief on her head. Utility poles and wires line the street. Automobiles are in the street. A Coca Cola" truck is visible at the far right. The pavement appears to be wet from rain. Inscribed on back: Main St South West Side / Salz - 751 Main St (1940) / Alderman's - 759 Main St (1940)"
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. Typewritten note attached to back of photograph mount reads in part: After seeing you I remembered that the Main & / Pearl St corner used to be call[ed] [sic] the 'Olmsted / Property' and in my copy of the First Hartford Directory / there is a John Olmsted, Merchant, listed at 221 Main / St. (Of course the numbers are different now). / This was bought by my father Charles W. Johnson / and, I suppose, his mother, with Governor Richard / D. Hubbard. Not very long ago sold again to a Mr. / Hardenbergh, who, I think [underlined] ran the Boston Branch Grocery. / As to the old Melodean' Building I only know that it was / bought at some time, by my grandfater, Griffin A. / Stedman and then sold by his heirs to Wise, Smith & Co. / I cant give you the real origins of these build- / ings w [sic] dates of transfers, but they could be found in / the town records, if you cared to go into it- / I'm sorry not to be more helpful, but am not / much of an antiquarian. / Yours sincerely / S/ Mabel Johnson."
