Description	Stone and brick commercial buildings, utility poles and sidewalks line a dirt street. Some buildings have awnings. The building at the far right with balconies and a balustrade is the American Hotel. The striped poles in front of the hotel probably indicate the presence of a barbershop. Signs read: "Oyster Dealers" "Flour" "Coal" "Hartford / Coal / Depot" "Eagle House" "Clothing / 116 / Wholesale / and /Retail" "Flour / Grain / and / Feed" "Iron & Steel." Horse-drawn carriages and wagons are in the street. Vehicles in the distance are blurred from movement. Cobblestones are in the foreground. Inscribed on back: "View on State Street looking from the [site of the] Post Office / toward the Conn. River, Hartford."<br>
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. <br>Alexander Rothschild was proprietor of the Eagle Hotel at 114 State Street in 1863-1864. <br>The Government Building in City Hall Square housing the Post Office was begun in 1873 and completed in 1883. <br>
