Description	View of a street in the Lower Project Area of the Church Street project, New Haven, prior to redevelopment. View is looking down along the sidewalk, with storefronts visible on the left, and parked cars on the right. Lettering on awnings and signs on the buildings advertise businesses, including (from left foreground to center background): "Beller's Package Store"; , TUDOR/GRILL/ "", "EARLE", a novelties shop, and the Casablanca Restaurant. Men can be seen sitting on stoops or standing next to the storefronts. A street sign for Gregson Street can be seen at left center; a one-way sign pointing in the direction of Crown hangs below. Cars are parked along the street and pedestrians are visible on the sidewalk. Fire escapes can be seen on a number of the buildings.
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger.<br>One of a collection of photographs taken by the New Haven Redevelopment Agency to document a massive urban planning and development project undertaken from 1956 through the mid-1970s. The federally-financed redevelopment initiative was realized through a series of projects focused on particular New Haven city neighborhoods identified by street or area names. These projects involved the demolition of old structures and construction of new buildings, roadways and other facilities.<br>Much of the Church Street project area had been characterized by a mix of small stores, restaurants, theaters and residences. In the course of redevelopment, whole blocks were demolished to make way for larger modern structures such as department stores, hotels, office buildings, a mall and the New Haven Coliseum.<br>Gregson Street extended from Crown Street to Chapel between Temple and Church Streets. It no longer exists.
