Description	A girl or woman at the left stands beside a large snowbank. Homemade signs stuck in the snow are illegible. Commercial buildings line the east side of Main Street in the background. The large brownstone building with arched windows is the Cheney Block, housing Brown Thompson & Co. Other stores have signs that read: "Stern & Mandlebaum" "St. John, Photographer" "Hart, Merriam & Co. / Dry Goods, Carpets, Paper Hangings, Bedding" "Clark and Smith / Book / and / Job / Printing / Fine / Mercantile / [P]rinting" "R. Ballerstein / Millinery" "New England Boot and Shoe House" "[S]amuels & Co." "Watches / Cleaned / and / Warranted / $1.00." Inscribed beneath image: "Main St. / Hartford, Blizzard '88."
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. Brown Thompson & Co. sold dry goods, fabrics and millinery at 400 Main Street. Abraham Stern and Jacob Mandlebaum were the partners in Stern & Mandlebaum, a dry goods store at the corner of Main and Temple Streets. According to Hartford Jews, a book by Rabbi Morris Silverman, published in 1970, Abraham Stern was born in 1825 and died in 1885. Jacob Mandlebaum was born in 1851 and died in 1906. Charles R. Hart, Lent B. Merriam and William E. Sugden were the partners in Hart, Merriam & Co., who sold dry goods and carpets at 364 Main Street. Samuel Clark and Andrew J. Smith were the partners in Clark & Smith, printers at 363 Main Street. Joel Samuels, Ernest A. Perry and Louis Samuels were the partners in Samuels & Co., who sold boots and shoes at 354 Main Street.
