framed
and
supported
by
wooden
timbers
resting
on the
granite
abutments
.
Cranes
and
derricks
loom
overhead
.
Temporary
wooden
buildings
are on
barges
in the
Connecticut
River
beside
the
bridge
.
Other
barges
hold
sand
and
gravel
.
Ladders
lead
to the
arches
.
Men
are
laying
granite
blocks
on the
arches
.
All
arches
appear
to be
under
construction
.
Some
are
nearing
completion
. The
contrast
between
the
darker
Leete's
Island
granite
and the
paler
Stony
Creek
granite
is
clearly
visible
on the
closest
abutment

of

Island
granite
. The
remainder
of the
structure
is
built
of

granite

Both
the
Leete's
Island
quarry
and the
Stony
Creek
quarry
are in
Branford
. <br>
Construction
of the
new
stone
arch
Bulkeley
Bridge
by
McMullin
,
Weand
&
McDermott
began
early
in
1904
and
continued
until
the
December
1907
when
the
bridge
opened
to
trolley
traffic
and the
general
public
. <br>
