Description	Men are on the steps of stone and brick building in the Second Empire style with mansard roof, lintels, dormers, and entry porch with Doric columns. "US" is in cast stone over the entrance. A cast-iron picket fence and boxes that read "" US Mail" are in front of the building. A fire hydrant, paved sidewalk, and utility poles are beside the dirt road. A horse drawn carriage is in front of a storefront with sign reading "Bishel." On the right is a row of shops in commercial buildings, a spire of a church, and a trolley with sign that reads "Berlin." Men and women are on the corner and in front of stores. Signs read "The Farrow / Lunch / Room" and "Pool." A wooden barrel is in the foreground. Inscribed on back: "No. 4 / Custom House and Post Office / Middletown, Conn."
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. Custom house was built in 1834 by Barzallai Sage and demolished in 1916. It was replaced by a Post Office. Additional notes not related to the image are on the back in German. August Schmelzer had the photographs taken and sent them to Germany to be made into post cards.
