Description	A man in uniform, including a hat, jacket with epaulets, a sword and boots, is seated on a stool beside a barrel. He is smoking a long clay pipe. Smoke issues from a hole in the barrel. A sign on the barrel reads: "Onions." A second man, also in uniform and wearing a powdered wig, is leaping up in alarm. Tents or teepees are in the background.<br>
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. <br>Although the fictitious incident was supposed to have taken place in the 1760s, the image probably dates from the 1850s or 1860s. <br>One of many legends surrounding Israel Putnam of Pomfret relates how, during the French and Indian War, he was challenged to a duel by an arrogant British officer. Putnam's choice of weapons was for the two men to sit beside a powder keg with a burning fuse, the winner to be whoever remained seated longest. After the officer yielded, Putnam revealed that the keg contained onions, not gunpowder. <br>
