Two
men
are
seated
on
granite
blocks
on
one
of the
arches
of the
Bulkeley
Bridge
.
One
man
is
elderly
and
wears
a
suit
. The
other
wears
a
straw
hat
,
bow
tie
, and what
appear
to be
sneakers
or
tennis
shoes
. A
third
man
uses
a
level
and
wooden
angle
to
check
the
position
of the
last
stone
to be
placed
.
Details
of the
construction
of the
wooden
framework
for
centering
the
spans
are
clearly
visible
at the
left
.
Heavy
bolts
hold
the
timbers
together
. The
iron
girders
of the
temporary
bridge
are in the
background
. What
appears
to be a
steam
engine
is
at the
far
right
.

Construction
of the
new
stone
arch
Bulkeley
Bridge
by
McMullin
,
Weand
&
McDermott
began
early
in
1904
and
continued
until
the
December
1907
when
the
bridge
opened
to
trolley
traffic
and the
general
public
. The
Bulkeley
Bridge
has
concrete
foundations
. From the
foundation
to the
springing
line
of the
arches
,
it
is
built
of
Leete's
Island
granite
. The
remainder
of the
structure
is
built
of
Stony
Creek
granite
.
Both
the
Leete's
Island
quarry
and the
Stony
Creek
quarry
are in
Branford
.
