Description	Men and a boy wearing overcoats and hats stand on and near the sidewalk. Some men read newspapers. One man smokes a pipe. Commercial buildings line the streets in the background. Some buildings have striped awnings. Signs on storefronts read: "319 - Mayer, Grace & Mayer - 319" "Insurance Co." "J.C. Wasserbach / Auctioneer / and / Real Estate" "Hansel, Sloan & Co." "325 - C.A. Rapelye's / Apthecary" "Bricks Mortar and Tim... / Will soon be flying on these premises. We're forced... / Consequently All Toilet Articles... / Hair Tooth and Nail Brushes, Combs, Mirrors, Snaps... / At Little or No Prices unt... / C.A. Rapelye." A fire hydrant and utility poles are near the curb. A street sign on a pole reads: "Main." Trolley tracks and horse manure are in the street. Inscribed in image, lower left: "HOW / 28 Mch 97." Inscribed on back: "Main & Asylum Sts. / M.B. Brainard."
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. Charles R. Hansel and Frederick H. Sloan were the partners in Hansel, Sloan & Co., a jewelry store at 323 Main Street. Charles A. Rapelye was a druggist at 325 Main Street. He specialized in homeopathic medicines. In 1897, he moved his business to 376 Asylum Street. Frederick W. Mayer, James J. Grace and Maurice A. Mayer were the partners in Mayer, Grace & Mayer, a jewelry store. Frederick Mayer and Maurice Mayer were the sons of David Mayer, a German jew who immigrated to Hartford in 1847. He opened a jewelry store at the corner of Main Street and Asylum Street in the 1860s, where he did business for 30 years. In 1895, he turned the business over to his sons and James J.Grace.
