Description	In an industrial interior, a man uses a wooden paddle to stir water and rags in a large wooden tub. A second man at the right unloads rags or pulp from a wooden bin. Water pours from a pipe at the left. Other machinery incorporates gears and rollers. The ceiling of the large wooden building is supported on columns. Letterpress text beneath images: "Washing and Beating the Rags."<br>
Notes	The Chelsea Manufacturing Company was a paper mill, located on the Shetucket River at the foot of 4th Street. <br>Rags, the raw material of paper, are converted into pulp by "continuous agitation and maceration" in water. <br>From Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, January 27, 1866. <br>
