Description	Elderly bearded man sits in a wicker chair at a desk piled with books and papers. He appears to be writing with a quill pen. Books line the shelves of a bookcase in the left background. There appears to be a leather-covered screen in the right background. Inscribed on back: "To his dear & honored Friend, Mrs. Clementina Welling /Geo. Bancroft / January 1888."
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. The historian and diplomat George Bancroft was born in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1800 and died in Washington, D.C. in 1891. Clementine Welling was the wife of Dr. James C. Welling. They lived at 159 Farmington Avenue, Hartford.
