Description	Hat of dark woven fabric has a two-horned ("bicorn") shape that is achieved by turning up two sides of the brim, these sides being wider than the brim at front or back. One side is decorated with a corded silk ribbon cockade; the other side is plain, but it stands slightly higher. Originally, the hat would have been decorated with a plume mounted in front, between the turned-up sides.<br>
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger.<br>This hat purchased in New York from Hortsman Brothers, whose name is printed inside the hat's crown. It was worn by Captain James Harman Ward (1806-1861) of Hartford, the first Union Naval Officer killed in the Civil War. He died in battle at Matthias Point, Virginia, on June 27, 1861.<br>Gift of Mrs. S. A. Ward.<br>
