Description	Smoke and flames pour from a wooden commercial building or warehouse in the background. A flag at far left, possibly on the prow of a steamboat, reads: "City / of / Hartford." A wharf extends into the Connecticut River. A ladder leans against the side of the building. In the foreground, firemen wearing helmets run towards the fire with hoses. A horse-drawn fire wagon is nearby. A horse-drawn steam pumper arrives at the right. The round object between the two vehicles is probably a hose reel. Crowds of spectators fill the area between the fire equipment and the burning building. Letterpress text beneath image: "Burning of the Hartford and New York Steamboat Co.'s Freight House at Hartford, Conn., Saturday, Sept. 22 - from a sketch by H.C. Curtis."<br>
