Robert
Palmer
&
Sons
of
Noank
and
retired
in
1913
, was
one
of a
fleet
of
steamers
owned
by
subsidiary
companies
of the
New
York
,
New
Haven
&
Hartford
Railroad
,
connecting
New
York
and
Providence
and
points
beyond
. The
largest
wooden-hulled
vessel
in
Sound
service
,
Connecticut
was
speedy
and
elegant
, but
proved
unreliable
as her
oscillating
steam
engine
was
subject
to
breakdowns
. She
ended
up
being
a
relief
boat
. Her
pilot
house
&
front
cabins
below
were
turned
into a
two-story
office
building
in
Salem
,
Massachusetts
and her
hull
into a
barge
. The
Palmer
family's
shipbuilding
and
repair
facility
, in
operation
from the
mid-19th
century
until
1914
, was
one
of the
most
prominent
on the
east
coast
.
It
was
incorporated
under
several
names
,
including
R
.
&
J
.
Palmer
,
Robert
Palmer
&
Sons
, and
Robert
Palmer
&
Son
Shipbuilding
and
Marine
Railway
, and
experienced
substantial
growth
in the
second
half
of the
19th
century
,
specializing
in the
production
of
utilitarian
barges
and
floats
.
Probably
before
1904
,
since
steamer
service
was
moved
to
New
London
in
1903
.
