Raymond

was a
screw
steamer
built
by
Robert
Palmer
&
Son
,
Noank
in
1911
. She was
purchased
by the
Navy
in
1917
and
served
as a
minesweeper
in
World
War
I
as the
USS
Raymond
J
.
Anderton
.
Decommissioned
in
1919
, she was
sold
to
foreign
buyers
. The
Palmer
family's
shipbuilding
and
repair
facility
, in
operation
from the
mid-19th
century
until
1914
, was
one
of the
most
prominent
on the
east
coast
.
It
was
incorporated
under
several
names
and
experienced
substantial
growth
in the
second
half
of the
19th
century
,
specializing
in the
production
of
utilitarian
barges
and
floats
. The
yard
employed
400
men
on
average
in the
first
decade
of the
20th
century
.
