Richmond
established
his
yard
along
Water
Street
in the
late
1860's
. He had
started
out
as a
ship
carpenter
and
gained
a
reputation
as a
designer
and
builder
of
smaller
vessels
. He had a
long
working
relationship
with
Charles
Henry
Mallory
.
Richmond's
boatbuilding
business
endured
into the
early
twentieth
century
.
Blacksmith
Lyman
Dudley
was an
extremely
successful
Mystic
businessman
. His
shop
employed
as
many
as
five
men
engaged
in
shipfitting
and
other
ironwork
. He was
part
owner
of the
Mystic
River
bridge
before
it
was
sold
to
Groton
and
Stonington
, and also of a
number
of
vessels
.
