The
four-masted
schooner
Perry
Setzer
is
resting
partly
in and
partly
out
of the
water
just
after
an
attempted
launch
.
Collapsed
ways
lie
under
her
bow
. A
number
of
people
can
be
seen
on
board
and on the
ground
to the
right
and
left
of the
vessel
. A
number
of
boats
containing
spectators
can
be
seen
in the
water
on
either
side
of the
schooner
.
Lettering
on the
bow
and
cabin
of the
boat
in the
foreground
reads
"
CLIMAX
",
identified
as an
oyster
boat
. The
Perry
Setzer
has
flags
flying
on her
rigging
; the
lettering
on her
stern
reads
: "
PERRY
SETZER/BRIDGEPORT
CONN.
"
Several
structures
can
be
seen
along
the
waterfront
.

. The
Perry
Setzer
was
built
by
Greene
Brothers
in
1902
, the
largest
vessel
built
in
Bridgeport
. Her
dimensions
were
216.8
x
42.4
x
17.8
feet
. She was
eventually
floated
, and
served
as a
commercial
vessel
until
lost
in
1924
. The
Greene
Brothers
came
to
Bridgeport
from
Maine
and
focused
their
business
on the
construction
of
powered
oyster
boats
. They also
built
several
schooners
. The
collapse
of the
ways
at the
launching
of the
Perry
Setzer
led
to
financial
difficulties
for the
company
and the
eventual
demise
of the
Bridgeport
business
. The
yard
was
acquired
by
Simon
Lake
of
Lake
Torpedo
Boat
Company
which
later
built
a
number
of
submarines
and
wooden
boats
. The
oyster
boat
Climax
was
built
by
Greene
Brothers
in
1900
, and was
among
the
earliest
gas-powered
boats
built
in
Connecticut
.
