Title

. The
Palmer
family's
shipbuilding
and
repair
facility
, in
operation
from the
mid-19th
century
until
1914
, was
one
of the
most
prominent
on the
east
coast
.
It
was
incorporated
under
several
names
and
experienced
substantial
growth
in the
second
half
of the
19th
century
,
specializing
in the
production
of
utilitarian
barges
and
floats
. The
yard
employed
400
men
on
average
in the
first
decade
of the
20th
century
. In the
World
War
I
time
period
,
Groton
Iron
Works
operated
on this
site
in
addition
to
having
its
main
yard
on the
Thames
River
in
Groton
. The
company
built
a
number
of
iron
and
wood-hulled
vessels
during
and
after
World
War
I
. The
Noank
yard
ceased
production
in
1919
. The
Groton
yard
continued
until
1928
.
