fleet
into the
second
decade
of the
twentieth
century
.
Annie

Wilcox
was a
screw
steamer
built
by
Mason
Crary
Hill
of
Mystic
,
1878
. She was
owned
by for
Leander
Wilcox
&
Co
. and was the
first
menhaden
steamer
in
Mystic
,
part
of what
became
the
Wilcox
Co
.
fleet
. In
later
years
she
belonged
to a
New
York
company
(1925-1931)
and was
stranded
off
Long
Island
in
1934
. The
Wilcox
Fertilizer
Company
was a
family
business
that
processed
menhaden
(fish)
,
producing
oil
and
fertilizer
.
Founder
Elias
Wilcox
and his
sons
were
active
in the
menhaden
fishery
as
well
, with
most
of the
sons
serving
as
captains
of
menhaden
sloops
and
later
steamers
. The
Wilcox
company
had
several
steamers
and
sloops
,
some
Mystic-
or
Noank-built
. The
menhaden
industry
was of
great
economic
importance
to the
Mystic
area
economy
,
especially
in the
last
quarter
of the
nineteenth
century
.
Wilcox
Fertilizer
company
was
very
successful
, and
remained
in
business
until
1935
. The
Palmer
family's
Noank
shipbuilding
and
repair
facility
, in
operation
from the
mid-19th
century
until
1914
, was
one
of the
most
prominent
on the
east
coast
.
It
was
incorporated
under
several
names
and
experienced
substantial
growth
in the
second
half
of the
19th
century
,
specializing
in the
production
of
utilitarian
barges
and
floats
. At the
time
the
Leander
Wilcox
was
built
, the
yard
employed
400
men
on
average
.
George
E
.
Tingley
was a
noted
Mystic
area
photographer
. In his
early
career
, he was an
assistant
and
later
sometime
partner
of
Everett
A.
Scholfield
.
After
1894
he
worked
independently
.
