Description	View of a statue identified as the Mason Monument, Mystic River. Statue portrays a man in Puritan dress, seen from the left. He is holding a sword in his left hand and appears to be pulling it out with his right.
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. The Mason Monument, Pequot Avenue, Mystic, memorializes John Mason, one of the leaders of the 1637 Pequot War against the Pequot tribe of Native Americans. Date of erection at the Pequot Avenue site is identified as 1889. It was moved from Mystic to Windsor in 1995. Printed on card at bottom: "THE MASON MONUMENT./MYSTIC RIVER, CONN./SCHOLFIELD & TINGLEY, Photo." Scholfield & Tingley was a partnership (1886-1894) of professional photographer Everett A. Scholfield and George E. Tingley, who started out as Scholfield's assistant. The firm had studios in Mystic and New London. Mystic River was the name for the area of Mystic village on the Groton side of the Mystic River. This area had formerly been known as Portersville. Boudoir-sized photograph mounted on white card with gold beveled edges, 8 1/2 x 5 1/4 in.
