Description	View of a building in what appears to be a waterfront area. A sign on the center section reads: "MERRITT-CHAPMAN & SCOTT CORPORATION." The center section has what appears to be a hipped roof. The wings on either side have pitched roofs. Some of the first story windows are large display-type windows. Striped awnings are visible over some of the double-hung windows on the first and second floors. To the left, above the building roof, an arrow points to what are apparently the topmasts of the three-masted schooner Blossom.
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. Caption below printed in blue ink: "This is a picture of the offices of the mer-/ritt, Chapman, and Scott Corporation. It/ is the oldest wrecking and repairing firm in/ the country. At the left of the Picture, a-/ bove the roof, the topmasts of our ship can/ be seen. On the right you can see the dericks [sic]/ of one of the wrecking barges. On the extreme/ right, the slender pole is a pole for holding/ up the wireless aerial. They have a man in/ the wireless room day and night. When any/ kind of distress message is picked within the/ New London territory a relief boat is sent out/ to the boat. The other day they got a message/ that the steamer 'El Occidente' was sinking out/ in Long Island Sound about ten miles from here./ The tug-boat and wrecking barge was sent out; / but after long searching, nothing could be seen./ It is thought that some amateur sent out the message for fun." In schoolbook writing pad converted to photo album described as "The beginning of the good ship/ BLOSSOM - Adventure/ Photos made by W. Kenneth Cyler/ about 1923." Blossom was also known as Lucy R. and Three Brothers. She was a commercial packet schooner, formerly the Lucy R. of Nova Scotia. She was purchased by the Cleveland Museum of Natural History with funds from a Mrs. Blossom and made a voyage to the Indian Ocean to gather ornithological specimens. Blossom was fitted out in New London and sailed out of that port circa 1923. Album apparently documents period of the conversion of the Lucy R. to the Blossom with photographs taken in New London, based on identification of related images. Merritt Chapman and Scott is a marine engineering, construction and salvage firm formed in 1922 when Merritt & Chapman Derrick & Wrecking Company merged with T.A. Scott Company of New London. The company is mentioned in several related images.
