Description	View of the Groton-New London ferry Governor Winthrop crossing the Thames River, moving toward the near shore. Printed at upper right: "FERRY BOAT GOV. WINTHROP, NEW LONDON, CONN." Boats can be seen along the shore in the background.
Notes	The Governor Winthrop was built by Robert Palmer & Son of Noank in 1905 and went into service on the Thames in that year. The Palmer family's shipbuilding and repair facility, in operation from the mid-19th century until 1914, was one of the most prominent on the east coast. It was incorporated under several names and experienced substantial growth in the second half of the 19th century, specializing in the production of utilitarian barges and floats. In the early twentieth century, the yard employed 400 men on average. Mounted on album page.
