Description	View from the Groton Monument, at Fort Griswold, Groton, looking west. Visible in the picture are the Thames River, downtown New London and Winthrop Cover (on the right). Arrows apparently point to the steamer identified as New Hampshire on the left, and the building identified as the Mohican Hotel in the center.
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. Caption typed in blue ink below reads: "This is looking west from the monument. Is/ a good view of the Thames River in the fore-/ ground and of New London in the Back ground./ This is a good view of the water front in the/ busy part of town,The long white steamer/ near left end of picture is the New Hampshire./ This is the boat I went to New York on. Near/ the center of the picture you can see the only sky scraper in town, the Mohican Hotel. The/ New Hampshire is an old sidewheeler [sic?]. She makes/ about 12 to 14 knots an hour. The Mohican is/ 12 stories tall. How is our hotel getting on?/ Notice clouds in the left hand corner. It was/ very cloudy that day." The New Hampshire is possibly misidentifed as a former sidewheeler. The New Hampshire identified in secondary sources as making stops in New London in this period was a propeller steamer built by Harlan & Hollingworth in Wilmington, Delaware, 1892 for the Providence & Stonington Steamship Company, which was acquired by the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad in 1892. She was one of a steamer fleet providing rail-steamboat service connecting New York and New England cities. Taken from the Groton Monument, which was erected in 1830 to commemorate the massacre at Fort Griswold in 1781. In schoolbook writing pad converted to photo album described as "The beginning of the good ship/ BLOSSOM - Adventure/ Photos made by W. Kenneth Cyler/ about 1923." Album apparently documents period of the conversion of the Lucy R. to the Blossom with photographs taken in New London, based on identification of related images. Blossom was also known as Lucy R. and Three Brothers. She was a commercial packet schooner formerly the Lucy R. of Nova Scotia. She was purchased by the Cleveland Museum of Natural History with funds from a Mrs. Blossom and made a voyage to the Indian Ocean to gather ornithological specimens. Blossom was fitted out in New London and sailed out of that port circa 1923. Good condition, yellow from glue.
