Mystic
native
Mason
Crary
Hill
was
noted
for his
innovative
approach
to
vessel
design
, and
is
credited
with
developing
the
half-clipper
. He
worked
for
Charles
Mallory
&
Sons
as a
designer
and
master
carpenter
. From
1860-1874
he was in
partnership
with
Amos
Grinnell
. The
firm's
Pistol
Point
yard
occupied
the
site
of the
former
Irons
&
Grinnell
shipyard
, and was
active
from
1864-1874
.
Hill
acquired
ownership
of the
yard
and
built
vessels
on his
own
there from
1876-1883
.
Taken
shortly
before
the
1875
fire
that
destroyed
the
Oceanic
Woolen
Mill/Mystic
Iron
Works
complex
on an
adjoining
site
.
