Description	View of the Groton-New London ferry Governor Winthrop crossing the Thames River, apparently moving toward the near shore. A number of people are visible on board. A small boat can be seen in the water to the right. Printed below image: "Ferryboat 'Gov. Winthrop,' New London and Groton, Conn., Ferry". On reverse: "Pub. by J. Solomon, New London, Conn." Area for stamp indicates one cent postage needed for United States and island possessions, Cuba, Canada and Mexico, and two cents postage needed for "foreign".
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. The Governor Winthrop was built by Robert Palmer & Son of Noank in 1905 and went into service on the Thames in that year. The Palmer family's shipbuilding and repair facility, in operation from the mid-19th century until 1914, was one of the most prominent on the east coast. It was incorporated under several names and experienced substantial growth in the second half of the 19th century, specializing in the production of utilitarian barges and floats. In the early twentieth century, the yard employed 400 men on average.
