Description	Starboard view of the schooner smack Mary E. Hoxie at anchor off Noank. The man at the tiller is identified as probably the owner, Captain John H. Berry.
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. The Mary E. Hoxie was built by R. & J. Palmer for Captain Berry, and named for the wife of John H. Hoxie. She was built for fishing in southern waters during the winter months. She was sold to Cuban owners in 1920. The smack was a fishing vessel that often had an water-filled well for keeping live catch.Those built in the southeastern Connecticut area had distinctive features and were referred to as "Connecticut" and later, "Noank" smacks. Carving on the vessel's transom was done by James Campbell of Mystic.
