Description	Men with canoes and paddles stand in front of a four-story Italianate hotel building with porches on the second and third floors, brackets beneath the roof and a cupola. A boxer dog stands by one of the canoeists. Two boys stand at the right. A boy on a bicycle is at the far left. The Connecticut River is at the far right. Several brick buildings are behind the hotel. In the left background, a large warehouse has signs that read: "J.J. Poole / Coal" and "Coal." A horse-drawn wagon, blurred from movement, is on the dirt road at the left. A utility pole is at the far left beside an embankment, which presumably carries the tracks of the Hartford & Connecticut Valley Railroad.<br>
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. <br>In the 1884 Hartford city directory, River House is listed as a saloon at 76 Ferry Street. <br>Joseph J. Poole was the proprietor of J.J. Poole & Co., dealing in coal and wood. Offices were located at 278 Main Street and yards at 172 Commerce Street. <br>The Hartford Canoe Club was organized in 1881 and chartered in 1884. <br>
