Perry
Setzer
was
built
by
Greene
Brothers
, the
largest
vessel
built
in
Bridgeport
. Her
dimensions
were
216.8
x
42.4
x
17.8
feet
. The
ways
collapsed
at her
launching
. The
Perry
Setzer
served
as a
commercial
vessel
until
she was
lost
in
1924
. The
Greene
Brothers
came
to
Bridgeport
from
Maine
and
focused
their
business
on the
construction
of
powered
oyster
boats
. They also
built
several
schooners
. The
collapse
of the
ways
at the
launching
of the
Perry
Setzer
led
to
financial
difficulties
for the
company
and the
eventual
demise
of the
Bridgeport
business
. The
yard
was
acquired
by
Simon
Lake
of
Lake
Torpedo
Boat
Company
which
later
built
a
number
of
submarines
and
wooden
boats
.
Based
on

photograph
appears
to
document
the
attempt
to
float
the
vessel
after
the
failed
launching
attempt
. The
Merritt
&
Chapman
Derrick
&
Wrecking
Company
appears
to have been
involved
in that
effort
. In
1922
Merritt
&
Chapman
merged
with
T.A
.
Scott
Company
of
New
London
to
form
the
marine
engineering
,
construction
and
salvage
firm
Merritt-Chapman
&
Scott
Corporation
.
