questionable
given
the
presence
of
ice
on the
river
and
vessel
chronology
.
Twilight
is
variously
identified
as
Twilight
II
and
Twilight
III
. She
is
identified
as the
second
sailing
ship
of that
name
built
by
Charles
Mallory
&
Sons
of
Mystic
. The
first
was a
clipper
ship
launched
in
1857
. The
actual
second
Twilight
was a
steamer
launched
in
1865
. The
third
Mallory
vessel
named
Twilight
,
depicted
here, was
launched
in
1866
and
wintered
in the
Mystic
River
before
being
rigged
in
early
spring
of
1867
. This
Twilight
had a
career
in the
California
trade
, was
under
foreign
ownership
by
1885
, and
shortly
thereafter
condemned
. The
Annie
M
.
Smull
was
built
in
1868
by
Charles
Mallory
&
Sons
.
Ella
was
built
by
Charles
Mallory
&
Sons
of
Mystic
,
1864
. She was
chartered
by the
War
Department
during
the
Civil
War
. From
1871-1903
, she
ran
between
Norwich
and
Watch
Hill
,
Rhode
Island
.
Foam
was
built
by
R
.
&
J
.
Palmer
of
Noank
in
1863
. The
Charles
Mallory
&
Sons
shipyard
was
located
on the
east
(Stonington)
bank
of the
Mystic
River
,
approximately
on the
site
of the
present
duPont
Preservation
Shipyard
at
Mystic
Seaport
.
It
produced
a
number
of
sail
and
steam
vessels
from
1851
to
1875
, with the
Civil
War
period
the
most
active
. The
Palmer
family's
shipbuilding
and
repair
facility
, in
operation
from the
mid-19th
century
until
1914
, was
one
of the
most
prominent
on the
east
coast
.
It
was
incorporated
under
several
names
,
including
R
.
&
J
.
Palmer
and
Robert
Palmer
&
Son
Shipbuilding
and
Marine
Railway
, and
experienced
substantial
growth
in the
second
half
of the
19th
century
,
specializing
in the
production
of
utilitarian
barges
and
floats
.
