Description	Port view of the three-masted schooner William H. Hopkins at dock off Cottrell Street, probably at the Asa Fish Wharf on the east (Stonington) side below the Mystic River drawbridge. Boys are sitting on a bridge abutment in the foreground. Houses can be seen in the background. The vessel alongside may be the towboat Dr. S.N. Briggs.
Notes	Title supplied by cataloger. The William H. Hopkins was built by George Greenman & Co. Completion of the vessel was rushed since she was chartered to take Mystic residents to the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia. The date of the photograph is identified as 1876, shortly after launching. Sources conflict as to where she was lost (1891): near Cape Hatteras or on Rockaway Beach, Long Island. George Greenman & Co. was a longtime Mystic shipbuilding firm, established in 1837 on the east (Stonington) shore of the Mystic River at the present site of Mystic Seaport. The three Greenman brothers, George, Clark and Thomas, were partners in that business and other enterprises and were prominent figures in the local community. The area of Mystic where the shipyard and the brothers' residences were located was known as Greenmanville. Handwritten in ink on cardboard backing: "Schr. 'William H. Hopkins.'/133 x 32 x 9. by Geo Greenman & Co., Mystic, 1876 for Hopkins & Pomeroy, Providence R. I. coal carrier./sister boat was the 'George W Pomeroy'/Photo by E. A. Scholfield - Collection of Dr. C. K. Stillman, Mystic, Conn. 1932." Appears to be same view as 1977.92.664. Identification of location and probable identification of the towboat are based on description of similar Scholfield view (1965.859.13) and secondary sources. Taken by E.A. Scholfield, a professional photographer who worked primarily in Mystic and New London from 1865-1913.
